he School of Business provides students with a broad background
in general business and economics and gives them adequate
preparation to pursue graduate school and to assume responsible
positions in business, industry, government, secondary teaching,
or in nonprofit institutions.
All entering freshmen in the School of Business can declare
their major areas and are assigned a key advisor in the
School of Business. Programs leading to the Bachelor of
Science or Bachelor of Arts degree are offered in business
administration; accounting; computer information systems;
marketing; management with concentration areas in environmental
management, human resource management, long-term care management,
production and opera-tions management; purchasing; business
education (teaching); economics/finance; and international
business. Environmental courses are offered in the evening,
and Long-Term Care Management courses are taught by health
care experts in the summer. A day student can complete requirements
for a bachelor's degree in four years if the curriculum
guide as outlined by the school is followed. A minor (18
hours) is required in many majors. Computer information
systems, business education (teaching), international business,
and management have no minor required. International business
majors receive the Bachelor of Arts degree, which requires
12 hours of modern language to be completed by university-earned
credit. An international semester abroad is also required
in international business.
Mathematics placement is determined on the basis of preliminary
information, including the SAT math score and the student's
academic background. A mathematics placement examination,
to determine the student's specific level of knowledge,
is administered for those students who do not demonstrate
minimum mathematics proficiency through past records. The
school encourages students who plan to continue graduate
work to take upper-level mathematics courses. Eight hours
of college math, which includes statistics, are required
in most bachelor's degree majors.
Business programs leading to the Associate in Science degree
are offered in business administration, banking, computer
information systems, computer programming AS/400, and legal
assisting. An associate degree in legal assisting requires
some evening classes and transportation to law libraries
located in Indianapolis. A day student can complete requirements
for an associate degree in two years if the curriculum guide
as outlined by the school is followed.
Curriculum guides listing degree requirements are available
for all business majors. Grade requirements for business
majors are listed on the curriculum guides. Requirements
for business minors are listed on a separate curriculum
guide and in this catalog. A grade of C- or above is required
in all business major and minor courses.
